father from prison and or a possible heart attack. The book opens with the h in court seeing her father being accused of stealing another pharmaceutical company s drug patent Her father is very fragile and has had some health problems and this accusation against his firm isn t helping any Then the h runs into the H outside the courtroom and their confrontation is rather hostile EP then takes us to a flashback of the H and h s history together.Five years earlier, the h was 17 and her father was married to his second wife, the h s mum died when she was small The 25 or 26 yr old H, whose own father worked as a pharmaceutical researcher for the h s father, supposedly fell in love with the h They dated and the h was in love right back Then he told her he wanted lots of babies and to marry her The h had an ovary removed due to cysts and was told chances for conception were very dim She loved the H, but did not know what to do about the infertility situation and delayed giving him a response to his marriage proposal She tried to talk to her stepmother about how to explain things to the H, but then she walked in on the H and stepmother in each other s arms on the settee The h realizes that the H was playing her to get part of her wealth and her father s pharmaceutical firm and has probably been with her stepmother the whole time She dumps the H by refusing to marry him and he gets angry cause while he knows she walked in on him and the stepmother, he keeps insisting she dumped him because he wasn t in her social class. The h dumped him because he was cheating on her with her father s wife and because she had little prospect of children and because she was 17 to his mid twenties and she blamed herself for his cheating She went to Switzerland and got a business degree The H went on to make some big money with his own firm and the stepmother fell and broke her neck and died, the h never told her father what she ran into Five years on the H has notes from his deceased father s research that prove the h s father is innocent He will give them to the h s father if she marries him and gives him a child and he is allowed to take over her father s pharmaceutical firm the H s revenge upon the h for dumping him because he was a lower social class Which actually makes NO sense that he would believe she was an elitist social snob She never acts like one, she is really huge on no animal testing and her bff is the elderly housekeeper that practically raised her Neither family was aristocratic, both families were well off and the H was the one in the gossip columns with various ladies and things Let us also not forget the cozy embrace with the stepmother either and really, what 26 yr old gets all irky over a teenager who ran off at 17 More likely this H is a gold digger, and probably always was and resented that his father had to work for the h s Well, this being HPlandia and all, the h has no choice but to marry and breed with the H and her ongoing father s trial is sufficiently delayed that the H can safely wait for an entire pregnancy to turn in the name clearing evidence or at least that is what the h believes The h s father likes the H and does his best to pimp her out and happily assigns control of his company to the H Tho the h WAS suitably shocked when she got preggers right off the bat She was less pleased when she met the little Greek wanna be OW tart who kept making moves on her husband The OW becomes a huge source of torment for the h when she follows the H and h from their Greek honeymoon back to the UK and still keeps chasing after the H and the h recognizes that she still lurves the H or at least she is enthralled with his club The H certainly wasn t fighting the OW off and tho there are no suspicious embraces until the very end, the h and H don t spend a lot of quality time together outside of bed and the h has a threatened miscarriage, so there isn t any lurve clubbings between them either In fact the H and h spend all their time sniping verbally at each other and both are pretty good at it, but there is no real relationship besides sex and animosity with too much internal h whining The h, who had a real job and did real projects as a marketing director for her father s company, has her own wanna be OM to torture the H with So when the h takes leave to get through her fragile pregnancy, she gets to obsess over the H s OW and the H has a bad time when the h starts crying after a little lurve mojo moment and he things she is crying over the OM Tragedy almost happens when the h gets into a car accident and has to have a Cesarean while unconscious, but the baby is fine and the h demands that the H turn over the proof of her father s innocence right away The h then finds out that the H actually get her dad off the hook at the beginning of the marriage, but let the stressed out medically fragile pregger h worry for nine months because he was mad that she believed him to be that cruel Which kinda makes me wonder if these two even occupied the same HP reality He cheated on her with her stepmother tho he claims the woman set him up and he was framed, he marries her for revenge and to take over her father s company, he continually rants utterly absurd accusations about her socialite tartiness when she was never in the papers and a virgin on the wedding night and he flaunts women who are obviously after him in front of her when he knows it upsets her and yet he thinks she should understand he is a nice person really and to top all that, he LETS the h severely stress over her father for nine months while preggers with a kid he demands she have This man needed a skillet or 70 to the head So anyhows, the accident and the c section seem to shake the H out of whatever dream land he was smoking in and the H tells the h that they can get a divorce, but he wants access to his kid The h is hurt cause she has tried really hard to make the H love her again and he just doesn t and he got a watch from the OW that claims she loves him Then she sees the H and OW hugging in the hospital corridor and she figures it is all over The h is packing to leave the H when the OW calls and explains that she has a fiance and the watch was for him and the H was supposed to get it repaired, but she never apologizes for acting like the Tart of HPlandia over the H The h forgives her and then decides to seduce the H It works and the H finally realizes that the stepmother lied about the h to break them up and the h srsly actually does believe the H was completely innocent of all charges and she also believes that he really loves her, instead of her dad s business, as she loves him for the HEA.This one is fabulous on the angsty drama, but the h s jealously and subsequent revelations have too much inner monologue and EP can t seem to decide on one angst plot, so she throws in everything but the kitchen sink and it makes a bit of a mess Plus we only get one scene where the H and h are even really nice to each other, so it makes it very hard to believe in the HEA, even after the H s big lurve declaration EP is really great at writing believable angst and then terrible at redeeming her H Usually she doesn t try to redeem them much, she just makes her h s jelly blobules begging to be squashed so that when the H picks them up, it is seen as a massively kind rescue effort to save the h from herself and EP counts that as an HPlandia win The big mis coulda been resolved w 4 li l words I can t have babies , but then we wouldn t have this li l gem now, would we Well, Erica actually can conceive, but offspring When H H 1st met, she s only 17 an heiress The book opens 5 years later w a trial, Erica s dad s being accused of stealing the formula for a new miracle migraine drug Her dad has a weak heart so time is the essence Rafe shows up tells Erica that he can save her dad cuz his late dad has documentation that proves Erica s dad is indeed the formula inventor, but Erica will have to marry Rafe in exchange for the life saving records He s bent on revenge cuz he had proposed to her 5 years ago mistakenly concluded that Erica didn t wanna marry him cuz she thought he s beneath her, thanx to Erica s step mom who told Rafe the big whopper the stepmom conveniently died afterwards Erica is still smarting, years after finding Rafe in flagrante delicto w her stepmom Both H H harbor seeds of bitterness, but now Erica is hella desperate to reverse her dad s misfortune Rafe has the upper hand She reluctantly gets hitched to Rafe soon gets preggers Rafe is consumed w jealousy cuz there s another rival for Erica s heart, an ambitious up comer who works for Erica s dad There s another Mediterranean chick whom Erica suspects has had the hawtz for her hubby she finds a hidden memento, adding layers of anguish on the tautly strung dwama When Rafe popped the question to Erica 5 years ago, she couldn t bring herself to come clean w him bout her medical condition, cuz she luved him too much he had mentioned he wanted to have lotsa kids w her Now Rafe impregnates Erica in the hopes that this is how he can keep her w him make her fall in luv w him He thinks that Erica doesn t wanna have a baby When she sheds tears after a long awaited luvmaking session due to Rafe s self imposed celibacy cuz he doesn t wanna jeopardize the pregnancy , he puts 2 2 together unfortunately comes up w 22, it enrages him that he suspects she s imagining herself making luv to her ex not Rafe Of course by the end we get the humbled hero who tries to act honorably to atone for his sins by letting wife baby go, w the stipulation that he ll have a say in their bundle of joy s future upbringing They finally realize that they ve been hurting unnecessarily things coulda worked out if they d opened up in the 1st place The book has the right amount of angst H H fight a lot but they don t go overboard w cruel words sanity defying deeds U can feel the underlying sensual awareness between em as they bicker drown in mutual passion The H H are mature individuals it s refreshing to see that career wise, they re both earners Rafe is no longer inferior to her financially Their mutual longing is palpable but conveying how they feel is an uphill battle They re still vulnerable cuz they didn t part ways amicably 5 years ago, There are still unresolved issues Rafe is alpha, but a caring possessive one he s not rotten to the core Despite all his dire threats, he s a decent man He can be quite cold when provoked into putting his guards up, cuz he s a prideful man a go getter The tormented H H have an arsenal of retorts that they use to the max but unbeknownst to them, they both have 1 thing in common, to make the other fall in luv all over again This is another re readable keeper I ve luved her writing style eversince the unusual Terms of possession I wish I could find her entire backlist cuz I m on a quest to find everything she s ever penned On a side note, it s interesting that the hero s last name is Cameron, which is the 1st name of the hero in Terms of possession , both heroes impregnate heroines w less than honorable intentions but end up falling in luv Must be EP s fav name Oh I also appreciated that Rafe has a tightly controlled temper doesn t smack Erica around, cuz I often can t fathom why authors feel the need to pourtension dwamatic conflict to the story w the requisite bitch slap remorseless hero blaming heroine in the aftermath, there s plenty of walls that can be punched covered w paintings to hide the evidence Sometimes a good ol romance like this isthan sufficient This was a bit of a chore to read, hence the lower rating I didn t quite get the character s motivations Erica seemed to act meaner than necessary After reading many HPs where I wish the heroine could use her tongue like a deadly weapon against the hero whothan deserved it, I found myself wincing at the mean things she said to Rafe I was never convinced he was a bad she had treated him in the past, and how she continued to treat him I understand self protection in the context of a story where the heroine is married to a hero who might break her heart, I just didn t feel it was authentic in this book I think that because I liked Terms of Possession so much, I have higher expectations for this author s books that this one didn t meet It wasn t a bad book, but just disappointing in the sense that the heroine was too mean for my tastes and the story wasn t that enthralling and lacked intensity for me When it comes to Harlequin Presents, I want the intensity, angst and drama Not enough of any of those for my tastes
