I bought this book and tape as well as the intermediate course,Svidaniye Y Moskvye BBC Radio second year Russian in the 80 s and learnt an amazing amount of Russian in the most enjoyable manner possible. It s a story about an American journalist being guided around Russia by a beautiful Russian woman, and a romance develops I was desperate to learn Russian so that I could find out how the story progresses. There s a wonderful somewhat sad twist in the tale.I bought the next Russian course that the BBC produced, but it wasn t nearly as good It was a somewhat boring, conventional language text book and I couldn t finish it.I ve since forgotten my Russian and tried to work through the course again, but I lost the original audio tapes and wasn t able to find them I even wrote to the BBC asking to buy a copy from their archives, but they wouldn t oblige. The course isn t any good without the audio it s a complete radio performance with dialogue and sound effects The good news is that you can now download the audio at archive org Search for ochenpriyatnoBBCYou can still buy the books from places like , Abebooks, Better World Books, etc.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.Although the language style is still a bit date, I strongly suggest you start with this course anyway before you move on to any other course The only additional recommendation I have is to extract all the vocabulary from the book s and make flashcards using Anki If I had made this extra effort to memorise the vocabulary using flashcards and mnemonics then I would probably not have forgotten it all and have to start again

Got it to replace one I bought 30 years ago Still a great little beginners Russian book would be great if someone could transcribe the old cassette that went with it onto CD.

I bought this book plus the 2 audio cassettes that accompany it in the early 80s, and returned to it 3 years ago to prepare for a trip to Russia converting the cassettes to mp3s I found it a most enjoyable introduction to the Russian language and also to Soviet era Russia In 20 lessons it takes the learner from zero, to a basic familiarity with the language and grammar just the present tense, though including a few hundred words of vocab The dialogues that illustrate the vocab and grammar tell the story of a trip by Svetlana, Arcady and Victor around Russia The dialogues are amusing and interesting at least when listened to on the cassettes A Russian friend who was helping me at the time also found them amusing and true to life in soviet times The drawback for the learner is that the vocabulary is 40 years old, so there is no mention of computers, mobile phones, or the other paraphernalia of modern life I still return to the dialogues to brush up on the language, and still find them amusing after listening to them many times.
